1500 LATE BOLIVIA 8 REALES. PENDANT & COIN WEIGHT 33.6 Grs. Set in 14K Gold Bezel. Includes Certificate of Authenticity from James H Cohen & Sons in New Orleans. Assayer "B" - Juan Ballesteros.
Weight pendant & cob 33.6 grams. The word "cob" comes from the Spanish " Cabo de Barra" which translated means end of the bar. The prescious metal planchets were sliced off the end of larger bars by hand. Since the metal was rather hard, the thickness and shape of the blanks would vary. Once cut, the planchets were weighed. If overweight, indiscriminate edge cuts were made to trim the excess weight. As a result of the irregular thickness and lack of tremendous pressure when striking the coin, many uncirculated cobs have only a limited amount of the design evident. The obverse of the coin has a large cross with the lions of Leon and castles of Castile around it while the reverse has the waves and pillars design. Please any questions you may have.
