SALE! Spanish Colonial 8 Reales Cob Coin Silver 26.82g Mexico Mint 1571-1700 AD
This piece of eight, cob, Spanish dollar or 8 reales coin dates from the late 16th to early 18th century. The style of cross on the reverse clearly shows the tiny'globes' or spheres at the ends of each branch of the cross, identifying it as originating from the Mexico City mint, after the year 1571. The obverse shield side displays the Hapsburg shield, so dating the coin up to and including the year 1700 (I do not believe the shield is Bourbon due to the lack of an obvious fluers-de-lis in the centre of the shield surmounting a small bird and lion). The design of the coin is fairly well struck, considering the asymmetrical shape typical of cob coins, although it is weaker on the shield side.
I would grade the coin as Fine, however this is just my opinion. Please refer to the photos for its condition etc.
This silver coin weighs in at 26.82g on my scales. The maximum diameter of this irregular shaped coin is approximately 36mm, or just under 1 and a half inches. A rare and beautiful coin, in good condition.
