1715 Fleet Spanish 8 Reales Silver Cob Coin Treasure Beach Find Authentic
The 1715 Treasure Fleet was a Spanish treasure fleet returning from the New World to Spain. At two in the morning on Wednesday, July 31,1715, seven days after departing from Havana, Cuba, under the command ofJuan Esteban de Ubilla, eleven of the twelve ships of this fleet were lost in a hurricane near present-dayVero Beach, Florida. Because the fleet was carrying silver, it is also known as the1715 Plate Fleet (platabeing the Spanish word for silver). Some artifacts and even coins still wash up on Florida beaches from time to time including this one.
This coin was recovered on the beach opposite one of the wreck sites. Despite having the normal sea wear the coin shows nice details including partial cross and lions on the reverse and partial shield on the obverse. Since it was a private beach find find, I don't have a C. But I guarantee it's 100 percent authentic after having collected and studying shpwreck artifacts and coins for over 30+ years. The coin has some weight to it weighing in at 15 grams and measures in right at 1 1/2" X 1 1/24".
