The popular Spanish-American silver eight reales, Pillar dollar, or piece of eight became a model for the American silver dollar. One of the greatest discoveries of precious metal in the New World was the Spanish "cob" eight reales, also known as piece of eight.

It represents the very first coinage that circulated in America back in the 1600 and 1700's. Minted over a period of 217 years, the silver was extracted from the Cerro Rico Mine in Petosi, Bolivia, known as the largest silver mine to ever be discovered. The Cerro Rico Mine was the main source of silver for the international economy, making Spain a world super power in which their entire empire was built on. Because of this, both the "cob" 8 Reales and the Pillar 8 Reales became internationally recognized trade units.

Struck under King Philip V and Ferdinand VI in. 917 fine silver, each Bolivia Cob weighed about 27 grams. The obverse displays the famous Pillars of Hercules as well as the inscriptions "8" at the top center representing the denomination 8 reales, and "PLVS VLTRA" meaning "more beyond". The reverse of the Cob shows the Cross of Jerusalem, with lions and a castle. The P mint mark represents Petosi, Bolivia. The assayer is also represented by a single letter and the year is shown at the bottom of the cross. During an excavation in Bolivia, a quantity of these Spanish Cobs were rediscovered and immediately sent to America for conservation and then to NGC for authentication.
