On fateful September 6, 1622 gale-force winds grounded and destroyed her and four other vessels off the coast of the Florida Keys. It is reported that 260 passengers and crew members perished.

The fabulous wealth of this wreckage sat undisturbed until its discovery by Mel Fisher's team on July 20, 1985. Most of the coins recovered from the Atocha were minted in the New World and usually have irregular shapes. The important features were the assayer's mark and mint mark, as it guaranteed the fineness of the bullion and the proper weight. The penalty for not showing these marks was severe. Genuine, Beautiful coin that would make a nice addition to any collection.
